NAVIGATING SYSTEMS
Summer Program 2022
Living in Polarizations: Observing Bias Through Bowen Theory and Cognitive Science
A rewarding part of organizing Navigating Systems is the ability to engage with other family systems thinkers on today’s challenges.
We are all dealing with the challenge of polarized thinking in our life with both family, friends, and work colleagues. Often the middle ground, where people can live together and respect differences, has been lost to the extremes. How can we understand this process in our communities and in our families? How can we connect to people whose views are lived so differently than our own? How do you relate to the people who are important to you with the tension that is ever-present?
Each of us will explore what systems thinking and Bowen theory adds to understanding this phenomenon, and ways to approach these challenges.
How do you relate, let alone define yourself, to a friend or a family member who has different firmly held beliefs―politics, the environment, vaccinations, censorship, sexuality and race relations, etc? What is the rising polarization in society really about and what do you do about your part in it?
Resources:
The summer session will use the books, The Bias that Divides Us by Keith Stanovich and Polarizations and the Healthier Church by Ronald W. Richardson, to focus the discussion.
